Gallery 1988: Eighties Movies as Travel Posters by Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo

We usually are up on our Gallery 1988 exhibits but the good folks at /Film have some exclusive images of the upcoming show by Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo entitled "Around the World in an '80's Daze"

Much like the old school VH1 TV show, Gallery 1988 is having the best week ever. Their Melrose location currently has the amazing Return of the Great Showdownsexhibit on the walls and this coming Friday, September 28, their Venice location opens an insanely clever and cool exhibit by popular pop artists Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo.
The show is called Around the World In An ’80s Daze and is comprised of travel posters for locations from famous ’80s films and TV shows. Stuff like The Terminator, Caddyshack, Vacation, A Nightmare on Elm Street or Thundercats. Opening 7 p.m. September 28 at Gallery 1988 Venice, Around the World In An ’80s Daze remains on display through October 20.
While each artist has already revealed a few posters to tease the fans, /Film is proud to debut three new posters each for this super exciting show. Check them out after the jump.

Around the World In An ’80s Daze, an exhibit of new work by Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo, opens 7 p.m. September 28 at Gallery 1988 Venice, 214 Pier Ave., Santa Monica, CA. It remains on display through October 20. For hours and more info,
Whalen, who is probably best known for his Mondo Disney prints has 10 prints in the show, and Perillo – best known for his Gallery 1988 pop contributions - has 11 prints. They’re all either 18 x 24 or 12 x 24 and in small editions of 50.
All of these will first be on sale at 7 p.m. September 28 at the gallery and will remain on display through October 20. Any leftovers will go on sale at gallery1988.comSeptember 29.

Poison Ivy by Sabrina Miramon (Ink&Color by Nicolas Demare)

This already beautiful drawing by Sabrina Miramon was incredibly brought to life by Nicolas Demare.

"The awesome Nicolas Demare took my Ivy sketch, inked it and (water)coloured it . Seriously, this guy is great.  That is something I really really can’t do, so I’m even more impressed by the result.
Makes me want to try it!" - Sabrina Miramon

Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo Arrives in LA This Weekend

Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo

We are Los Angeles’ largest pop-culture convention, owned by comic legend Stan Lee and Horror icon, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and a few other crazy and creative people. Our September 15 – 16 show at the LA Convention Center will be an epic experience for all!
Get your tickets today!
This great new convention offers a little bit of everything; comics, gaming, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and horror. Last year in it's first year the attendance was incredible for a fledgling convention. This year the legendary Marvel Comics creator and icon, Stan Lee, has top billing and the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira, is back.

One of the great things about this convention is that it feels small and independent. It doesn't have the corporate sponsorships that inundate larger cons but still draw talent from all genres. In addition to the panels, and signings there's a ton of other events going on. The Zombie Apocalypse survival course, the Activision Fun Center, Magic the Gathering tournament, masquerade contest, cast reunions, screenings, a quidditch tournament, and plenty more. Hope to see you there.

ART: Mini-Batman's 'Adventure Time' Adventures Tumblr

(From Comics Alliance:)
Adventure Time's Land of Ooo is a colorful realm full of... passion... making it fertile ground for humans/anthropomorphic candy/monsters/shape-shifting dogs to get vociferous to the max. What better place for a tiny Christian Bale quoting Batman to relocate to? Nikolos Sardos answers this question with aplomb at his Mini-Batman's Adventure Time Adventures Tumblr, which the artist/animator describes as "just a silly series of pictures I drew to amuse myself and my twitter bros." Fans of Batman's Silver age suit will appreciate Sardos' costume choice for the tiny Caped Crusader as he recites lines from the Christopher Nolan trilogy of Bat films while interrogating or at least attempting to interrogate your favorite AT stars. You can see a selection of Mini-Batman's Adventure Time encounters drawn by Sardos after the cut.

Comic Book Spotlight: Creator-Owned Heroes

Is it a comic book? Is it a magazine? The answer is yes. The awkwardly titled but aptly named "Creator-Owned Heroes" is really two comic book stories with magazine-type features. In this new world of $4 comics of varying value what creators Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Steve Niles, Kevin Mellon, et al. have brought to market is an exciting new model easily worth more than cover price.

Let's start with the two comic book stories currently running in COH, each about 10-11 pages long.

The world ended a long time ago. How it happened exactly and what exists in the wasteland have always been a mystery. Now Chloe, Gil and a gang of rebels have escaped the last human stronghold and are blazing across Post-Apocalypse America in search of paradise.

"TRIGGERGIRL 6," Part One
In this sci-fi thriller, the sixth in a series of genetically modified assassins born in a secret laboratory sets her sights on the ultimate target. But what happens when the perfect killing machine takes a personal interest in her target only to uncover a conspiracy that may change the fate of the entire human race?

That is two great stories from some of the best talent in the industry. Also, included in issue #1 was an interview with Neil Gaiman, Triggergirl cosplay, convention photos, and original essays by the creators about the importance of self-ownership. Future issues included interviews witth Bill Tortolini, Mark Waid, Scott Morse and features about personal training, starting a Kickstarter, getting into the industry, art gallery, etc. The additional features are eclectic and add a connection to the creators unlike anything else on the stands right now. You get the impression that the creators are as much fans of the medium  as we are and are proud to share some behind-the-scenes stories and thoughts on making comics today.

Do yourself a favor and pickup 'Creator-Owned Heroes'. If you value quality comics with a personal touch then this will not disappoint. It's available at your local comic book shop, sometimes by request, and digitally at Comixology where for a limited time Issue #1 is free to download and Issue #2 is discounted.
