REVIEW: 'The Goddamned' #1 by Jason Aaron, R.M. Guera and Giulia Brusco

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Biblical adaptations are nothing new. Lately, there's been a slew of movies like 'Noah' and 'Exodus' that have been huge productions but have failed miserably at the box office. Do audiences really want to see or read these stories? Has the white-washing of characters for these films affected the marketing to larger audiences? Box office receipts on an anecdotal basis show folks aren't interested. Perhaps if those films had been the savage visceral experience that 'The Goddamned' by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera is then it certainly would have been more entertaining. The blonde, blue-eyed male lead aside 'The Goddamned' #1 is a brutal walk through Genesis that is bleak, stark and primitive.

THE FLASH REVIEW (S2E6): 'Enter Zoom'

★★★★★ (5/5)

'Enter Zoom' is the mind-blowing introduction of this season's big bad villain Zoom as he makes the jump to our earth and is everything Jay Garrick has said - a monster. There's a saying about poking a bear that will lead to one angry bear and Team Flash finally get their wish when Zoom comes through the breach and unsurprisingly wreaks havoc.

REVIEW: 'Descender' #7 by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen

★★★★★ (5/5)

'Descender' returns after a triumphant first arc and trade release with new characters, twists and turns. If you thought Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen had used all their best material in the first six issues, issue seven demonstrates not only some more plot developments but a change in tone and stakes. This sci-fi masterpiece keeps delivering with gorgeous artwork and emotional storytelling.

SUPERGIRL REVIEW (S1E3): 'Fight or Flight'

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Living in your cousin's shadow can't be easy. Just ask Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) who as CBS's 'Supergirl' continues to remind us through three episodes in the show's rookie season. A rookie hero herself she tries to stand on her own but when a foe of Superman decides to take out his revenge on her it requires the Man of Steel to bail her out. I'm just hoping it doesn't become a crutch to use James Olsen's super-alert-watch to call in Big Blue every time Kara gets in trouble.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' TV Spot Puts Rey in the Spotlight

"I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes. I know your eyes," the voice of Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata narrates this new TV spot for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.' Without any context, these new shots imply, at least for those of us trying to desperately guess the narrative, that Rey could be Han Solo's daughter. See for yourself.

REVIEW: 'Aliens/Vampirella' #3 by Corinna Bechko and Javier Garcia-Miranda

★★★★★ (5/5)

It doesn't happen often enough where a comic book series, a crossover especially, gets better as it continues. There's usually a lull around issue three or four that is either heavy in exposition or deviates from the action to develop the characters. 'Aliens/Vampirella' #3 balances all these things and keeps the story moving forward with intelligence, suspense, and superior pacing.

REVIEW: 'The Hangman' #1 by Frank Tieri and Felix Ruiz

★★★★☆ (4/5)

'The Hangman' #1 is putting the dark in Dark Circle Comics as the latest  reinvented title from the classic archives of MLJ is released. It's not your typical debut issue as the titular character doesn't make an appearance until near the end but it sets a mood and tone you can expect going forward in the series. This bloody tale is one of crime, punishment, redemption and the boogeyman they call the Hangman.

The Flash Review (S2E5): "The Darkness and the Light"

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Until 'Legends of Tomorrow' are officially on the air and running, 'The Flash' and 'Arrow' will be assembling the origin stories of the team. It's a delicate balance of introducing guest stars for the sake of establishing their backstory for another show and servicing the main narrative of the season. It can get awkward like 'The Fury of Firestorm' but in 'The Darkness and the Light' the introduction of Kendra Saunders (aka Hawkgirl) is a little more subtle while still adding Dr. Light and addressing Cisco's secret powers. With so many storylines going on it could easily have gone sideways but the episode smoothly juggles them with precision.

REVIEW: 'Monstress' #1 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda

★★★★★ (5/5)

'Monstress' #1 is a stunningly conceived dark fantasy that is beautifully illustrated by Sana Takeda and brilliantly written by Marjorie Liu. The oversized issue offers 72 pages of epic world-building and a character arc that feels like a one-shot as dense and moving as a collected trade. It's a somber but inspiring story set in a world scarred by war, prejudice, injustice, and monsters.

Look at These New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Posters

New character posters have arrived for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.' They feature Ren, Finn, Han, Leia, and Kylo Ren. Some obvious questions come to mind like "Where's Luke?" and "Why isn't there a Captain Phasma poster?" With 44 days until it premieres on December 18 a lot can happen and there's still time to see more posters and tidbits. We hope. Check them out.

PREVIEW: The Flash Faces the 'The Darkness and the Light' as Wells, Garrick, Hawkgirl and Dr. Light Appear Tonight

'The Flash' is beginning to get a little crowded as Earth-2's Harrison Wells has made his presence known to Earth-1's Barry and as he tells Joe in one of the clips below he's not sure he can be trusted. Dr. Light comes on through the portal to shed some light (sorry) on Zoom and a scene from Earth-2 has Wells and Jay Garrick in a tense confrontation. And Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl makes her debut tonight in another clip where poor Cisco gets shot down. Whew! Catch 'The Flash' tonight at 8 on the CW.

Supergirl Review (S1E2): 'Stronger Together'

★★★★☆ (4/5)

One of the biggest questions regarding Superman over the years has been how do you make such a powerful, indestructible, seemingly perfect hero interesting. Well, the creators of CBS's 'Supergirl' have found a way to approach that topic with his cousin, Kara, by exploring her time on Krypton (something that's not possible with Kal-El), wrangling her ego and realizing she needs more than her brute strength to be an effective superhero. While the Kryptonite-infused sparring session with Alex was a great ego-check for Kara, who inadvertently caused an ecological disaster while trying to steer clear a tanker from a fire in the opening, it reminds us Supergirl is still a hero in training.

PREVIEW: 'The Hangman' #1 by Frank Tieri, Felix Ruiz, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Rachel Deering

They say the Hangman is nothing more than an urban legend. A spook story told to scare criminals straight. But those who encounter him—like hitman “Mad Dog” Mike Minetta—know different. They know that when he comes for you… you’re dead already. Join fan-favorite writer Frank Tieri (WOLVERINE, BATMAN) and artist extraordinaire Felix Ruiz (WOLVERINE MAX, HALO) for an ongoing tale of horror, the supernatural and violence…  and learn why some men may never be redeemed.

Stan Lee's Comikaze 2015 Brought Big Stars, Big Crowds

Comikaze Expo
If Sunday's crowded aisles full of geeky humanity was any indication, Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo 2015 was a rousing success. It's the busiest last day of the 3-day pop culture event that I can remember over its five-year run. The Los Angeles Convention Center was a buzzing hive of activity with fans, a lot of them in costume, streaming through West Hall. The young con continues to grow and adjust as it draws bigger and bigger crowds.
