How Do You Create a Comic Strip in Procreate?

Creating a comic strip is a fun and engaging way to tell a story. With the help of technology, you can now create your own comic strip using various digital tools. One of the most popular digital tools for creating comic strips is Procreate.

Procreate is a drawing and painting app that offers a wide range of features and tools for artists. It is available on the iPad, making it easy to use while on-the-go. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a comic strip in Procreate.

Step 1: Create a New Canvas

Open Procreate and click on the plus sign at the top right corner to create a new canvas. You can choose from various canvas sizes depending on your preference.

Tip: For creating comic strips, it’s better to choose landscape orientation as it provides more space for panels.

Step 2: Add Panels

To create panels, click on the wrench icon at the top left corner and select “Canvas.” From there, select “Edit Drawing Guide” and then select “Panel.” You can choose from various panel layouts or create your own custom layout.

Once you have chosen your panel layout, go back to the canvas and start drawing your panels using the pencil or brush tool.

Tip: Use different line weights for borders that separate each panel. This helps in distinguishing one panel from another.

Step 3: Sketch Your Characters

Before starting with inking or coloring, sketch out your characters within each panel using pencil or brush tool. This helps in getting an idea of placement, proportion, and overall composition of each panel.

Tip: Use thicker lines for foreground characters and thinner lines for background characters. This creates depth in your artwork.

Step 4: Ink Your Characters

Once you are satisfied with your sketches, use the ink tool to create final line work for your characters. Make sure to use a finer brush size for details and thicker brush size for outlines.

Tip: Use different brush sizes for different parts of the character, such as thick lines for hair and thin lines for clothes.

Step 5: Add Color

Now it’s time to add color to your comic strip. Use the fill tool to fill in large areas with base color and then use the brush tool to add details and shading.

Tip: Use complementary colors for shadows and highlights to make your characters pop out more.

Step 6: Add Text

To add text, click on the wrench icon at the top left corner and select “Add.” Then select “Text” and choose a font style. Type in your dialogue or captions within each panel.

Tip: Use different font styles for different characters or moods within your comic strip.

Step 7: Export Your Comic Strip

Once you have completed your comic strip, click on the wrench icon at the top left corner and select “Share.” From there, you can share your comic strip via email, social media, or save it to your device.
