If you’re a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), you’ve probably heard of the concept of ‘Phases’. The MCU is divided into three phases, with each phase consisting of a set of movies that are interconnected and build towards an overarching storyline.
Phase 1 and 2 have already been completed, and now we are in the midst of Phase 3. In this article, we’ll take a look at what Marvel movies are in Phase 3.
Phase 3 – An Overview
Phase 3 is comprised of ten movies, which began with ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and will end with ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. The stories told in these films have been building up to the two-part finale that is ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
1. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
‘Captain America: Civil War’ marks the beginning of Phase 3.
The movie pits Captain America against Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, as they disagree over the Sokovia Accords – regulations put in place to monitor and control superheroes. This leads to a rift between the Avengers, causing them to split into two factions.
2. Doctor Strange (2016)
‘Doctor Strange’ introduces us to Stephen Strange, a brilliant surgeon who loses his ability to operate after a car accident.
He travels to Nepal, seeking the help of The Ancient One, who teaches him about mystic arts and alternate dimensions. As he gains new abilities, he must protect Earth from villains who threaten its existence.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
2 (2017)
In this sequel to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, and his team continue their adventures across the galaxy as they try to uncover the mystery of Peter’s father. Along the way, they encounter new allies and enemies while dealing with their own personal issues.
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ sees Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, trying to balance his life as a student with his superhero duties.
He’s mentored by Tony Stark, but when a new villain called The Vulture emerges, he must prove himself as a hero without relying on Stark’s technology.
5. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ finds Thor imprisoned on the planet Sakaar and forced to participate in gladiatorial games against his former ally, The Hulk.
Together they escape and team up with other characters to stop the destruction of Asgard from Hela, the Goddess of Death.
6. Black Panther (2018)
‘Black Panther’ takes us to Wakanda, a hidden African nation that’s rich in vibranium – a rare metal that has immense power.
T’Challa becomes king after his father’s death and must deal with challenges both within and outside Wakanda.
7. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
‘Avengers: Infinity War’ brings together all the heroes we’ve seen so far in the MCU to face their biggest threat yet – Thanos.
Thanos wants to collect all six Infinity Stones so he can control reality itself.
8. Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)
In ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’, Scott Lang teams up with Hope van Dyne, aka The Wasp, to find her mother who’s been lost in the quantum realm for years.
Meanwhile, they must also evade the FBI and a villain called Ghost.
9. Captain Marvel (2019)
‘Captain Marvel’ is set in the 1990s and tells the story of Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force pilot who becomes a superhero after being exposed to alien technology.
She must stop an alien invasion while also uncovering the truth about her past.
10. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU so far.
The surviving heroes from ‘Infinity War’ must come together to defeat Thanos and restore order to the universe.
11. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ takes place after ‘Endgame’ and follows Peter Parker as he goes on a school trip to Europe.
However, his vacation is interrupted when he must team up with Mysterio to stop new threats from emerging.
