Why Doesn’t Disney Plus Have All Marvel Movies?

Disney Plus is a popular streaming platform that is home to a vast collection of movies and TV shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. However, despite being owned by Disney, the platform does not have all Marvel movies available for streaming.

This has left many fans wondering why this is the case. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind Disney Plus’ lack of some Marvel movies.

What Marvel Movies Are Missing on Disney Plus?

  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Why Aren’t These Movies Available on Disney Plus?

The answer to this question lies in the distribution rights of these movies. While Disney owns Marvel Studios and its entire library of movies, some films were made in collaboration with other studios.

For example, The Incredible Hulk was produced by Universal Pictures and distributed by them as well. Similarly, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home were produced by Sony Pictures and are still under their distribution rights.

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk was made before the MCU was established as we know it today. At that time, Marvel was still licensing out its characters to other studios for movie adaptations instead of producing their own films.

Universal Pictures acquired the distribution rights to The Incredible Hulk before Disney bought Marvel Studios. This means that even though The Incredible Hulk is part of the MCU, it cannot be streamed on Disney Plus without infringing on Universal’s distribution rights.

Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home

Sony Pictures owns the film rights to Spider-Man and all related characters. They agreed to let Marvel Studios use Spider-Man in their films as part of a deal.

However, Sony still has the distribution rights to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. This is why these two movies are not available on Disney Plus.

Will These Movies Ever Be Available on Disney Plus?

It’s possible that these movies could become available on Disney Plus in the future. Distribution rights for movies can expire or be renegotiated, which could allow Disney to add them to their library.

For example, Disney was able to acquire the streaming rights to The Incredible Hulk’s TV series from Universal in 2020. This gives hope that they may eventually be able to stream The Incredible Hulk movie as well.

Conclusion

While it is disappointing that some Marvel movies are not available on Disney Plus, it is important to understand the reasons behind this. The distribution rights for these movies are owned by other studios, which prevents them from being streamed on the platform. However, there is still a vast collection of Marvel movies and TV shows available for fans to enjoy on Disney Plus.
