Batman / Batman Joker

Why Isn’t Joaquin Phoenix the Joker in the Batman?

The Joker is one of the most iconic villains in the Batman universe. With his twisted sense of humor and unpredictable nature, he has captivated audiences for decades.

As such, it’s no surprise that fans were excited when it was announced that a new Batman movie was in the works. However, many were disappointed to learn that Joaquin Phoenix would not be reprising his role as the Joker in this film. So why isn’t Joaquin Phoenix the Joker in the Batman?

There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, it’s important to note that there are actually two separate Joker movies in development right now.

The first is Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character. This movie is set outside of the continuity of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which means that it’s not connected to other DC movies like “Justice League” or “Aquaman.”

On the other hand, “The Batman” is set to be part of the DCEU continuity. It will star Robert Pattinson as Batman and is being directed by Matt Reeves, who previously helmed “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Given that these two movies are separate entities with different directors and visions, it makes sense that they would have different actors playing the same character.

Another factor to consider is that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is a very different interpretation than what we’ve seen before. In Phillips’ movie, he plays Arthur Fleck – a failed comedian who descends into madness and becomes a symbol for societal unrest in Gotham City.

It’s a gritty and grounded take on the character, whereas previous versions have been more cartoonish or theatrical in nature. While there’s no doubt that Phoenix gave an incredible performance as Fleck/Joker, it may not be a good fit for what Reeves has in mind for “The Batman.”

It’s also worth noting that the Joker is not the only villain in “The Batman.” The movie is said to feature a rogues’ gallery of villains, including Catwoman and Penguin. With so many characters to juggle, it’s possible that Reeves simply didn’t want the Joker to be a major focus of the film.

In conclusion, there are several reasons why Joaquin Phoenix isn’t playing the Joker in “The Batman.” While it would certainly be interesting to see him go up against Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight, it makes sense for each movie to have its own distinct vision. Plus, with so many exciting casting announcements already being made for “The Batman,” there’s no doubt that fans have plenty to look forward to.
